At the dining table, the family gathered, exchanging pleasantries. However, the atmosphere was thick with unspoken words. Neil, usually jovial, seemed distant. “Neil, Mukta, is there something you’d like to share with us?” Teju’s voice was gentle yet firm.
Neil looked up, his eyes reflecting a mix of anger and hurt. “It’s nothing, Teju. Just work stress.”
Mukta’s eyes welled up, but she remained silent, focusing on her plate.
Teju knew there was more to the story but decided not to press further at the moment. She made a mental note to speak to them individually later.
Later in the day, Teju found Mukta in the garden, lost in thought. She approached her, placing a comforting hand on her shoulder.
“Mukta, I can see you’re troubled. You know you can talk to me,” Teju said softly.
Mukta sighed, tears threatening to spill. “Teju, it’s about Neil. He’s been distant lately, and I feel like he’s hiding something from me.”
Teju listened intently as Mukta poured out her concerns. She learned that Neil had been coming home late, avoiding conversations, and seemed preoccupied. Mukta feared that he might be involved in something dangerous or, worse, that he was seeing someone else.
Determined to get to the bottom of this, Teju decided to talk to Neil. She found him in his study, staring blankly at his computer screen.
“Neil, we need to talk,” Teju said, closing the door behind her.
Neil looked up, surprise evident on his face. “Teju, is everything okay?”
“I should be asking you that. What’s going on between you and Mukta?”
Neil sighed, running a hand through his hair. “It’s complicated, Teju. There’s something I need to tell you.”
Teju sat down, bracing herself for what was to come.
“I’ve been offered a job abroad,” Neil began. “It’s a great opportunity, but it means relocating. I haven’t told Mukta because I know she won’t be happy about it.”
Teju’s eyes widened in surprise. “Neil, this is huge. Why didn’t you discuss this with Mukta? She’s your wife; she deserves to know.”
“I know, Teju. I was trying to find the right time, but now it feels like there’s no right time.”
Teju shook her head. “You need to talk to her, Neil. Keeping this from her will only make things worse.”
That evening, Neil gathered the family in the living room. He took a deep breath and shared the news about the job offer. As expected, Mukta was shocked and hurt.
“Neil, how could you even consider this without talking to me?” Mukta’s voice trembled with emotion.
“I was going to tell you, Mukta. I just…didn’t know how,” Neil replied, his eyes pleading for understanding.
The room fell silent as the weight of the situation settled over the family. Teju watched as Mukta stood up, tears streaming down her face.
“I need some time to think,” Mukta said before walking out of the room.
The following days were tense. Mukta avoided Neil, spending most of her time in her room. The family tried to give them space, but the strain was evident.
One afternoon, Teju found Mukta packing a suitcase.
“Mukta, what are you doing?” Teju asked, alarmed.
“I need to get away for a while, Teju. I can’t be here right now,” Mukta replied, her voice breaking.
Teju felt a pang of sadness but understood Mukta’s need for space. She hugged her tightly. “Take all the time you need, but remember, running away won’t solve anything. You and Neil need to talk.”
Mukta nodded, wiping her tears. “I know, Teju. I just need to clear my head first.”
As Mukta left the Chavan house, Teju couldn’t shake off the feeling that this was just the beginning of more challenges to come.
